This dissertation is a documentary editing dissertation in history. It is based on approximately 1,700 primary documents, transcribed and annotated, 2,800 images from microfilm (about 1/2 of the 1,700 documents), an approximately 400 page historical narrative utilizing the material, It also has a biographical database, a glossary, a bibliography, and other appendices. The dissertation is tagged in sgml and filtered to html for web browsing. The project as it exists on the date of acceptance for the degree will be frozen on a CD-Rom, and the historical narrative and some appendices will be printed out for use as a reference guide at the University of Virginia.
