Over 1,400 object records from the Bayly Art Museum's
collections are included in this new database which is available
for searching. We invite you to browse our collections by artist,
by date or range of dates, by category, and by region. Many
records will include thumbnail, medium, and large images. Included
in this sampling are American and European paintings, Old Master
prints, 20th century drawings, prints, photography and sculpture,
and Native American and African art objects.
In the form on the "Search Page" you may type
Rembrandt, for example, in the Artist Last Name
field, click on Caption with Thumbnail Image Results and
Do Search to view a list of works by Rembrandt held by the
Bayly Art Museum. Then click on the title of any of these to view
a larger image and the description. Clicking on this new image
which will take you to a full-size image for closer examination of
the work.
You may mark the boxes, for example, next to Painting
and Europe, or North America, to view selections of
European or American paintings. You may narrow the results of your
search by including a date or range of dates.
Other possible searches include marking the Photography
box to view a sampling of this collection. Entering Unknown
in the Artist Last Name field and marking the North
America box will result in a list of over 100 objects in our
Astor Collection of Native American art.
The creation of this website and the opportunity to increase
accessibility to our collections has been made possible by a
University of Virginia Arts
Enhancement Grant and in collaboration with the Institute of
Advanced Technology in the Humanities.
Additional sections of the database and images to be added
will include our Asian, African, and Pre-Columbian collections, as
well as other works in the fields already represented in the
database.
University of Virginia Faculty interested in using objects in
the Museum collection to enhance the presentation of their
curriculum, or students interested in researching objects for the
