English Collections

Literature (Drama, Prose, and Poetry)

American Poetry Database, to 1900 includes 40,356 poems from 1,288 works by 209 poets, along with six landmark anthologies of American poetry.

African American Poetry Database, 1760-1900 is a collection of over 2,500 poems, based on William French's bibliography, Afro-American Poetry and Drama 1760-1975.

Early American Fiction, 1789-1875 includes 886 volumes, totaling 230,016 pages. 136 authors are represented. In addition, 199 manuscript items (525 pages of drafts, letters, and miscellaneous items) have been transcribed and 124 non-text items (photos, engravings, etc.) have been included in the collection.

Early English Prose Fiction contains over 200 complete works in English prose, from the period 1500 to 1700, by writers from the British Isles.

Eighteenth-Century Fiction contains 77 complete works in English prose, from the period 1700 to 1780, by writers from the British Isles.

English Poetry Database This database of over 165,000 poems is made available to members of VIVA (Virtual Library of Virginia) -- a consortium consisting of 39 publicly supported colleges and universities in Virginia. Some private colleges have also purchased access to individual databases. If you believe your college is a VIVA member and you are unable to access this database, consult your college library. The Electronic Text Center does not have the rights to give or sell general access to this material.

English Prose Drama comprises 1,653 plays acted on or intended for the stage which are either wholly or predominantly in prose. [Dramatic works wholly or predominantly in verse appear in English Verse Drama.]

English Verse Drama This database contains more than 2,200 works by around 500 named and over 300 anonymous works, from the Shrewsbury Fragments of the late thirteenth century through the unparalleled output of the Elizabethan and Jacobean period to the end of the nineteenth century.

Middle English Collection contains approximately 65 titles from Anelida and Arcite to Troilus and Criseyde.

Old English Corpus comprises over 3,000 different texts, and contains all surviving Old English text (excluding some variants). The Old English Corpus is a database held by the Etext Center under a licensing agreement with the Dictionary of Old English Project at the Centre for Medieval Studies, University of Toronto.

Editions and Adaptations of Shakespeare is comprised of 584 plays in 11 major editions of Shakespeare's works.

Riverside Shakespeare includes 45 works originally published by Houghton-Mifflin.

Twentieth-Century American Poetry covers more than 316 poets and includes over 52,000 works.

Miscellaneous Fiction and Non-Fiction

Modern English This heterogeneous collection contains fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama, letters, newspapers, manuscripts and illustrations from 1500 to the present, arranged for browsing by author's last name or by category of interest.

Newspapers and Periodicals

African Ameircan Newspapers (19th-century) brings together the complete word-for-word texts of major 19th century African-American newspapers.

Civil War: A Newspaper Perspective contains the full text of over 11,000 articles from over 2500 issues of The New York Herald, the Richmond Enquirer, and The Charleston Mercury, published between November 1, 1860 and April 30, 1865.

Harper's Weekly Fulltext Database: 1857-1912 contains the fully-searchable text of Harper's Weekly, starting with its first issue in 1857, and including all text and images up to 1912.

Pennsylvania Gazette (1728-1800) While all readable copies of the Pennsylvania Gazette have been included in this database, several gaps exist due to the British military threats against the city of Philadelphia in 1776, and during their occupation of the city from September 1777, through June 18, 1778.

Reference Resources: Dictionaries and Encyclopedias

Dictionary of the History of Ideas The Dictionary of the History of Ideas attempts to provide a clear exposition of influential ideas. The DHI recounts the historical development of such ideas across a range of disciplines, including philosophy, religion, politics, literature, and the biological, physical, and social sciences.

Oxford English Dictionary, 2nd Edition contains the entire text of the 22-volume Oxford English Dictionary, second edition, which merges the original OED with the supplements prepared throughout the twentieth century.

Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy is a searchable full-text database that contains over 2,000 alphabetically-arranged entries, which vary in length from 500 to 15,000 words.

Religious Resources

Bible in English Twenty-one versions of the Bible. In addition to the thirteen complete Bibles, there are five New Testament works, two Gospel works and William Tyndale's New Testament, Pentateuch and Jonah.

Virginia Collection includes close to 20 texts including Tristan and Parzival

Middle High German Interlinked is the product of a National Science Foundation grant to bring together lexical and literary Middle High German material for scholarly pursuit and investigation.

Goethe's Work contains the complete text of the 143 volumes of the Weimar Edition. Every word of Goethe's literary and scientific works, his diaries and his letters from the Weimar Edition is included.

Japanese

Japanese Text Initiative is comprised of over 300 works of Japanese literature. Full access to the Japanese texts requires software that can read and input Japanese characters.

Latin

Patrologia Latina Database is an electronic version of the first edition of Jacques-Paul Migne's Patrologia Latina, published between 1844 and 1855, and the four volumes of indexes published between 1862 and 1865.
