This is another of Billings' illustrations for the "deluxe" edition of Stowe's novel. Here, Tom kneels to his heavenly "master." Uncle Tom's Cabin is a very Christian novel, and all Christians are supposed to kneel to Jesus and God as their masters and lords. But it's worth noting that in Billings' 147 illustrations only two white characters are shown kneeling, while he frequently depicts slaves on their knees. The Barrett Collection, UVA A 1852 .S76 U4 |
