<p>AS soon as they had passed,<lb/>
little Benjamin Bunny<lb/>

set off--with a hop, skip and<lb/>

<p>THAT wood was full of<lb/>

Cotton-tail and Peter.</p>

<p>Old Mrs. Rabbit was a<lb/>
widow; she earned her living<lb/>
by knitting rabbit-wool mittens<lb/>
and muffetees (I once bought<lb/>
a pair at a bazaar). She also<lb/>
sold herbs, and rosemary tea,<lb/>

<p>LITTLE Benjamin did not<lb/>

<p>PETER was sitting by himself.<lb/>
He looked poorly,<lb/>

<p>``Peter,''--said little Benjamin,<lb/>
in a whisper--``who has<lb/>
got your clothes?''</p>

<pb n="21" />

<p><figure entity="PotBen22"><figDesc></figDesc></figure></p>

<p>PETER replied--``The scarecrow<lb/>
in Mr. McGregor's<lb/>
garden,'' and described how he<lb/>
had been chased about the<lb/>
garden, and had dropped his<lb/>
shoes and coat.</p>

<p>Little Benjamin sat down beside<lb/>
his cousin, and assured him<lb/>
that Mr. McGregor had gone<lb/>
out in a gig, and Mrs. McGregor<lb/>
also; and certainly for the day,<lb/>
because she was wearing her<lb/>

<p>PETER said he hoped that<lb/>

<p>At this point, old Mrs.<lb/>
Rabbit's voice was heard inside<lb/>
the rabbit hole calling--<lb/>
``Cotton-tail! Cotton-tail!<lb/>
fetch some more camomile!''</p>

<p>Peter said he thought he<lb/>
might feel better if he went<lb/>
for a walk.</p>

<pb n="27" />

<p><figure entity="PotBen28"><figDesc></figDesc></figure></p>

<p>THEY went away hand in<lb/>

looked down into Mr. McGregor's<lb/>

<p>Peter fell down head first;<lb/>
but it was of no consequence,<lb/>

<p><figure entity="PotBen34"><figDesc></figDesc></figure></p>

<p>LITTLE Benjamin said that<lb/>
the first thing to be done<lb/>
was to get back Peter's clothes,<lb/>
in order that they might be<lb/>

<p>They took them off the scarecrow.<lb/>
There had been rain<lb/>

<p>Benjamin tried on the <orig reg="tam-o-shanter">tam-<lb/>

<p>BENJAMIN, on the contrary,<lb/>
was perfectly at<lb/>
home, and ate a lettuce leaf.<lb/>
He said that he was in the<lb/>
habit of coming to the garden<lb/>
with his father to get lettuces<lb/>
for their Sunday dinner.</p>

<p>(The name of little Benjamin's<lb/>

<p>The lettuces certainly were<lb/>
very fine.</p>

<p>PETER did not eat anything;<lb/>

<p>LITTLE Benjamin said that<lb/>
it was not possible to get<lb/>
back up the pear-tree, with a<lb/>
load of vegetables. He led<lb/>
the way boldly towards the<lb/>
other end of the garden. They<lb/>
went along a little walk on<lb/>
planks, under a sunny <orig reg="red-brick">red-<lb/>

<p>The mice sat on their <orig reg="door-steps">door-<lb/>

<p>THEY got amongst <orig reg="flower-pots">flower-<lb/>

tubs; Peter heard noises worse<lb/>
than ever, his eyes were as big<lb/>
as lolly-pops!</p>

<p>He was a step or two in<lb/>
front of his cousin, when he<lb/>
suddenly stopped.</p>

<pb n="57" />

<p><figure entity="PotBen58"><figDesc></figDesc></figure></p>

<p>THIS is what those little
rabbits saw round that
corner!</p>

<p>Little Benjamin took one<lb/>
look, and then, in half a minute<lb/>
less than no time, he hid himself<lb/>
and Peter and the onions<lb/>
underneath a large basket. . . .</p>

<pb n="58" />

<p>THE cat got up and stretched<lb/>
herself, and came and<lb/>
sniffed at the basket.</p>

<p>Perhaps she liked the smell<lb/>
of onions!</p>

<p>Anyway, she sat down upon<lb/>
the top of the basket.</p>

<pb n="63" />

<p><figure entity="PotBen64"><figDesc></figDesc></figure></p>

<p>SHE sat there for <hi rend="italic">five hours</hi>.</p>

<p rend="center">* * * * *</p>

<p>I cannot draw you a picture<lb/>
of Peter and Benjamin underneath<lb/>
the basket, because it<lb/>
was quite dark, and because<lb/>
the smell of onions was fearful;<lb/>
it made Peter Rabbit and little<lb/>
Benjamin cry.</p>

<p>The sun got round behind<lb/>
the wood, and it was quite late<lb/>
in the afternoon; but still the<lb/>
cat sat upon the basket.</p>

<p>AT length there was a <orig reg="pitter-patter">pitter-<lb/>

some bits of mortar fell from<lb/>
the wall above.</p>

<p>The cat looked up and saw<lb/>
old Mr. Benjamin Bunny<lb/>
prancing along the top of the<lb/>
wall of the upper terrace.</p>

<p>He was smoking a pipe of<lb/>
rabbit-tobacco, and had a little<lb/>
switch in his hand.</p>

<p>He was looking for his son.</p>

<pb n="69" />

<p><figure entity="PotBen70"><figDesc></figDesc></figure></p>

<p>OLD Mr. Bunny had no<lb/>

<p>He took a tremendous jump<lb/>
off the top of the wall on to<lb/>
the top of the cat, and cuffed<lb/>
it off the basket, and kicked it<lb/>
into the garden-house, scratching<lb/>
off a handful of fur.</p>

<p>The cat was too much surprised<lb/>
to scratch back.</p>

<p>WHEN old Mr. Bunny had<lb/>

door.</p>

<p>Then he came back to the<lb/>
basket and took out his son<lb/>

whipped him with the little<lb/>

<p>Then he took out his nephew<lb/>
Peter.</p>

<pb n="75" />

<p><figure entity="PotBen76"><figDesc></figDesc></figure></p>

<p>When Mr. McGregor<lb/>
returned about half an<lb/>

things which perplexed him.</p>

<p>It looked as though some<lb/>
person had been walking all<lb/>
over the garden in a pair of<lb/>
clogs--only the foot-marks<lb/>
were too ridiculously little!</p>

<p>Also he could not understand<lb/>

managed to shut herself up<lb/>
<hi rend="italic">inside</hi> the green-house, locking<lb/>

<p>WHEN Peter got home,<lb/>
his mother forgave him,<lb/>

and coat. Cotton-tail and<lb/>
Peter folded up the <orig reg="pocket-handkerchief">pocket-<lb/>
